What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy designed to help the brain psychotherapy designed to help the brain process and resolve distressing memories and trauma. Through structured bilateral stimulation, EMDR supports the nervous system in reprocessing stuck experiences so they no longer feel overwhelming or intrusive.

Treatment
EMDR is most commonly used for PTSD and trauma-related symptoms. It is also effective for anxiety disorders, panic, phobias, performance anxiety, and certain depressive symptoms linked to past experiences. Treatment targets specific memories that contribute to current distress.

That being said, some clients do not qualify for EMDR due to a high amount of dissociation. We will work together to determine your best course of treatment.
Session Structure
After preparation and stabilization, you will briefly focus on a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements of tapping. This process allows the brain to reprocess the memory in a way that reduces emotional intensity. Sessions include time for grounding and integration before concluding.

Many times, a client will feel more comfortable taking things slowly and building trust before utilizing EMDR techniques. There are 8 different phases to EMDR, and we can take our time and build trust. The client is free to stop and go as needed, and there are many ways to pause conversations about traumatic events and focus on calm, safe spaces for meditation purposes as needed.

The number of sessions varies depending on the complexity of the trauma, the number of target memories, and your overall treatment goals. Some clients experience meaningful relief within a few sessions, while others with complex of developmental trauma may require a longer course of care.

EMDR is recognized as an effective trauma treatment by major health organizations and has been extensively researched. It is conducted in a controlled, structured manner to minimize overwhelm. A thorough assessment ensures clients are emotionally prepared before trauma processing begins.
Price
Aurora Lake Mental Health believes in inclusivity no matter the diagnosis and EMDR is the same price as a regular therapy session. Each person can come in for therapy, and if EMDR is deemed to be helpful, we have the skills to try it.
